Fair and settled weather meant open crossing were no problem and I was able to play around the Garvellachs, Grey Dogs and Corryvreckan. My plan was to take in the Mull of Kintyre but deteriorating weather and named storm 'Hector' forced the viking option of portage at Tarbert. Then the not so sheltered waters off Bute led me to the safe option of paddling via the Kyles and catching the ferry rather than a paddle across the Clyde. I had hoped to return via Ailsa Craig -next time?Peter Bissethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01844043640916069001noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7107579194494501602.post-19644093692623143552019-02-04T14:19:00.002+00:002019-02-04T14:19:37.352+00:00Catching up on 2018 -AprilApril saw us in Brittany for a week of paddling around St Malo and then at the CKMer gathering at Paimpol catching up with old friends.
Easy to recognise this spot, but did you find the lighthouse keepers well nearby, did the pine marten gambol around your tent, did you find the massive stone age midden in the dry cave nearby.
Camping spots are tight on the wave cut ledges just above HW, you can circumnavigate at this level with a bit of scrambling. Indeed clambering into the interior can be hard work. I had to re-open an old well for drinking water near the lighthouse.
Not too many sheep so space for wild flowers.

Lunching on a beach, a raven caught my eye. It was watching over an apparently dead sheep, but the sheep, wedged upside down in the rocks, moved a leg so I went to have a look. It was alive but very weak and with its wool saturated was too heavy to move. Using some driftwood wedges I slowly managed to turn it. However, it only staggered a couple of metres dragging its hind quarters then sunk down again. I diagnosed a broken back and was sad to leave it to die, but happy for the ravens who were no doubt already planning a new family with the prospect of easy food. Next day it had vanished, so must have got feeling back and been able to move off.
A steady F5 on the nose slowed us down, despite it being neaps the tide almost balanced the wind in places but never-the-less we were only making about 1.5kt on average. Eventually we ran out of tide still short of the Needles. Once it turned against us the only thing to do was to enjoy the blast back through the Hurst narrows. Warm and sunny, the sea would have looked more threatening if it had been cold and grey. A great day out on the water.Peter Bissethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01844043640916069001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7107579194494501602.post-46713035634471174552016-07-29T18:32:00.001+01:002016-07-29T18:48:22.328+01:00Two months indolent solitary paddling and mountain walking in Scotland

My route through May and June and into July, time to watch the ring plovers and oyster catcher chicks from a twinkle in their parents eye to independent teenagers. With only myself to please I spent a lot of time watching wildlife. Time becoming more and more irrelevant, only the tides marking the passage of the day.
We had a training session on the sea front today. Wind cross-shore force 5-7, sea flat but a wind blown chop to 1m and a dumping shore-break strong enough to knock you off your feet. Did I mention the 1.5 to 2kt tide running with the wind? Equals very hard work making way uptide and upwind, keeping in the shore break was the best bet but with always a chance of a bongo slide onto dryland. VE paddles have kindly lent us a range of their touring paddles to try out. A range of carbon Aircore Explorers and an experimental pre-production 'Voyager' with a longer thinner blade. Here is the 'VE Voyager' with my greenland stick and Liz's favourite the Epic Relaxed.

Once launched we could mess about upwind, downwind, round and round, surfing. I found the carbon VE Explorers too stiff and powerful for me (1.7m, 63kg 30 nm a day without tidal assistance paddler). However, I got to like the 'Voyager' on a glass shaft.

Here it is in the hands of another club member, the 'aircore' construction gives a sort of bladder (think bladder wrack) you will see here if you click to enlarge, making the blade very stiff and strong and floaty. Great for braces, rolling, self rescues......

Even, I must confess to VE, catching a bit of shingle when flirting with the shore dump. Not a sign of a scrape or damage, these are very solidly made despite being very lightweight.

The prototype 'Voyager' is apparently about 650 sqcm area so similar to many medium touring paddles like the Epics. I would like to try a smaller area in the same shape 600 or even less as it had bags of power, no flutter so could probably be cut to an even more elongated shape to give a tendon saving gentle 'catch'.

VE has established a name in WW blades and there is every chance of their touring blades catching on. Liked it!Peter Bissethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01844043640916069001noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7107579194494501602.post-48168484211249776962015-12-22T09:25:00.002+00:002015-12-22T09:25:18.533+00:00 My annual foray into white waterHere is 3 hours of paddling the 'Dart Loop' on Saturday 19 December condensed into 4 minutes. It was a good water level, around 1.20m on the gauge and the best place to be in gale force winds and lashing rain.
Selsey is underrated as a play spot, the race works in either direction even in calm weather if the tide is big enough.
The ice comes and goes in mysterious ways, driven by wind and tide. We only just got off the water in time in this bay. Another few moments and we would have been separated and crushed.
to apparently small pieces which can never-the-less prove inconvenient for the kayaker.

Once the tide goes out you can see why those little pieces can be hard to navigate!

Then there are the large bergs best viewed from a healthy distance away.

Once they leave the deep fjords the larger bergs often go aground on shallower spots in the highly irregular bottom of the Bay (200-400m deep). They act like mobile islands funnelling or reversing tidal flow, creating their own currents from the volume of cold melt water falling to the sea bed, creating their own micro-climate of fog and cloud. They make prediction of tidal flows next to impossible. Two or three of them side by side create temporary 'land' to affect water flows. On the other hand they break the wind and sea and maintain ice free areas in their lee. The smaller pieces drift on the wind and tide.

When stationary the ice is not too dangerous to navigate, stay away from the big bits, although even a block of a few tens of tons could hurt you as it rolls over or splits up. Then there are the bits of submerged ledges which break off and surface with great force. There is a constant crack of gun shots and rumble of thunder, but seldom close enough to see, just a mysterious swell from time to time. However, a bit of wind and tide soon get it moving. It is simply incredible how quickly conditions can change from an ice free sea to a complete log-jam of ice. Where have all the bits come from? Even more mysteriously a few hours later, or the next morning, and it has all dispersed. Kampe's ice navigation rules:

1. stay away from ice as much as possible or paddle past quickly
2. never paddle over submerged ice ledges, often visible 20 or 50m down as pale shadows.
3. don't start to think that you can predict the stability or behaviour of the ice -you cannot

Once the bigger blocks start eddying around the only thing to do is get off the water as quickly as possible.
The Anasacuta is based on a west Greenland style kayak, so three weeks paddling and a weeks hiking from Ilulissat were in a sense a pilgrimage as well as a jolly good holiday .
